Exterior Firefighter/Scene Support

Main Functions

  • Performs all functions of a firefighter including fire extinguishment, and interior search, vehicle rescue and rope rescue.
  • Some firefighters also perform roof operations such as ventilation 

  

Minimum Training

  • Member Orientation-6 hours
  • Hazardous Material Training-15 hours
  • CPR & First Aid-10 hours
  • OSHA Training-16 Hours
  • BEFO & IFO

  • Places water on fire from outside of house, connects hoses to hydrants, can perform rescue operations with additional training. 
  • Less dangerous than interior firefighting

  • Member Orientation-6 hours
  • Hazardous Material Training-15 hours
  • CPR & First Aid-10 ho

  • Serves in a support role for the senior firefighters at actual emergencies
  • Shall attend monthly training drills with the full department

Fire Police

Main Functions

  • Ensures a safe scene for firefighters and medical personnel by controlling traffic.
  • Members respond directly to scene.

All of these training requirements may seem like a lot upfront, but you will work alongside other firefighters and train together, learning invaluable skills and knowledge along the way. 


All of this training is for not only YOUR safety, but your fellow firefighters safety, and most importantly, the civilians safety!

If you would like to serve your community by becoming a volunteer firefighter with Rotterdam Fire District #2, you should live within the Fire District and be at least 16 years of age.  We will provide you with all the training necessary to build the skills you need to become a firefighter in our organization.  Download the application, fill it out, and drop it off at our fire house.  Stop by and see us on Mondays from 9:00am-11:00am or 6:30pm-9:00pm.  We would be more than happy to show you around!

Procedure for Active Membership

A. All applications for Active Membership in the Company must be submitted on a form provided by the Company, which is signed and dated by the applicant. All applications are to be read at the next Company meeting and immediately submitted to the board of directors.


B. The Board of Directors shall maintain a record of all applicants. The Board of Directors shall post the applicant's application on the Company Bulletin Board, where it shall remain until the next company meeting. Objections to any application may be submitted, in writing, by an Active Member to the Board of Directors. Objections must be submitted to the Board of Directors within 30 days of the posting of the application in order to be considered by the Board.


C. If Applicant is not a resident of Rotterdam Fire District 2 the application will be submitted to the Chief for residency review by the Board of Fire Commissioners. If rejected by the Board of Fire Commissioners the board of directors will send a rejection letter explaining the reason for rejection. 


D. The Board of Directors shall conduct the interview process and shall examine the applicant's qualifications for membership.


E. The Chief shall conduct a background check for arson convictions and for sexual offenses mandated by New York State.


F. The Board of Directors shall conduct interviews of the applicant, and then determine whether to grant or deny Junior or Probationary Membership. Should the Board of Directors reject an application for membership, the applicant shall be prohibited from applying for membership for the next twelve (12) months following the vote of rejection.  The Board of Directors may only give Active-Probationary Membership or Active-Junior Membership and may not any other type of membership.


G. If an application for Active-Probationary or Active-Junior Membership is approved by the Board of Directors, the Board of Directors shall submit the name and qualifications of any approved Applicant to the Chief, for approval by the Board of Fire Commissioners of Rotterdam Fire District No. 2.


H. No person shall exercise any privileges of Active Membership until the Board of Fire Commissioners of Rotterdam Fire District No. 2 approves the applicant. Once an application has been deemed accepted by the Board of Fire Commissioners of Rotterdam Fire District No.2, and the Chief has received approval from the Fire District Health Administrator that the applicant has received their physical they shall be accepted as a Probationary or Junior Member of the Company at the next meeting of the Company and they shall be provided an updated copy of the By-Laws.
